Tutorial: Scope Action
How to delete all printer connections to a specific print server on my client machines
This tutorial describes how to configure a Scope Action to scan every machine for printer connections pointing to a specific print server and to delete them.
Solution
Note: This tutorial applies to Goverlan v7.01.36 and later.
Let's assume that an existing print server named OLD_PRINTSERVER is being decommissioned and replaced by a new server. We need to delete any existing printer connections to this print server on the network.
Create a new scope action, define its name and click on Next.
Under Scope, select the Computers object type and define the list of machines to process (see: Defining the Scope). Click on Next.
Under Actions, double click on Add New to start the Action Module property window.
Under Execute
the following Action(s), click on
Add/Remove > Execute Computer Action > Printers >
Delete Instance
Under Only
if the following is true, click on
Add/Remove > Set Computer Condition > Printers > Owner
Computer Name
Click in the Condition cell (where it indicates: <Enter Condition Here>) and set it to 'Contains:'
Click on the Desired Value cell (where it
indicates:
<Enter Value Here>) and configure the Owner Computer Name
parameter to OLD_PRINTSERVER
You should see this:
Click on OK.
Complete your scope action and run.
Goverlan will then visit each computer as defined in the Scope, and remove any printer connections which points to the OLD_PRINTSERVER server.
Note about Execution
In order to remove a user printer connection on a client machine:
The machine must be ON and accessible.
You need to have administrative rights on the client machine.
The user must be logged-in or the printer connection must be a Per-Machine connection.
A single run of this scope action may not process 100% of the existing printer connections. You will need to manually Re-Run the scope action daily or schedule the scope action to be executed daily for a period of time.
You cannot use the Re-Run on Failed Objects Only mode. You must Re-Run the scope action on the full scope every time. This is because these actions can run successfully if a computer is ON but no user is logged-in.
